How to Sow Wildflower Seeds
Growing wildflowers is simple and rewarding, whether you’re planting in a garden, pots or containers, a school setting, or an outdoor space. Our wildflower seed packets contain a carefully selected UK mix, suitable for a wide range of growing conditions.
When to Sow Wildflower Seeds
Wildflower seeds are best sown from March to October, when soil temperatures are warmer and daylight levels are higher. Spring sowing often produces flowers within the same growing season, while summer sowing establishes strong plants that continue to develop over time.
Where to Plant
Choose a bright, sunny spot wherever possible. Wildflowers grow well in:
Garden borders and beds
Pots, planters, and containers
Raised beds
Outdoor areas at schools, workplaces, and events
Wildflowers are adaptable and do not require compost. They grow happily in ordinary garden soil and often prefer soil that isn’t overly rich, which helps flowers develop naturally.
Preparing the Soil or Containers
Clear the area of weeds and gently loosen the top layer of soil. If planting in pots or containers, ensure there are drainage holes and use soil or compost as available — specialist compost is not essential.
How to Sow
Scatter the wildflower seeds evenly over the soil surface, whether planting directly into the ground or into pots. Avoid overcrowding to give plants space to grow.
Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. They should sit close to the surface rather than being buried deeply.
Water gently after sowing and keep the soil slightly moist during the early stages of growth.
Aftercare & Growth
Seedlings usually appear within 7–21 days, depending on weather and conditions. Once established, wildflowers are low maintenance. Water during dry spells and allow plants to grow naturally.
Flowers typically appear 6–10 weeks after sowing, although timing will vary depending on sunlight, soil type, and weather.
A Natural Result
As with all wildflower seeds, each planting produces a unique mix of flowers. Growth and flowering times vary, creating a natural display that supports bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
